So Councillor Noel Campbell is gone, helped along by those who made the complaint that he was now too high a grade in the public service to continue to represent people in his native town. Funny isn’t it that some people who are paid from the same public purse, a lot more than Cllr Campbell, remain as elected members of local councils.

The membership of Mayo Sinn Féin has unanimously ratified its team to contend the county council elections next June. The party’s local election convention held in Castlebar last weekend also endorsed the candidate to contest the Castlebar Town Council elections.

Castlebar Town Council was returned to its quota of nine councillors at last week’s monthly meeting of the local authority. Labour’s Harry Barrett and Sinn Féin’s Therese Ruane were co-opted on to the council in place of Johnny Mee and Noel Campbell respectively.

While the headlines may have been grabbed in the past few weeks with councillors urging the people of the town not to vote for a former councillor who has decided to come back for some more, the race for the nine seats in Castlebar Town Council promises to be one of the most exciting in the county.
